Worst case scenario running around with radios, as you say, would get you lifted or far worse. Just look at the Olympic planning, "anyone attempting to gain access to any event with radio transmitting equipment will be refused entry", out of OFCOMs mouth. So you can imagine how you'd be treated at a time of hightend sensitivity to matters of state security.....RAYNET or not.

Everything has it's place and time, but I think RAYNET could do and be so much more.

        Regards Terry

We didn't at any point encourage the assistance of local amateurs (RAYNET). We had a contact number, but in all honesty the Amateurs whos information we had wouldn't have liked how they where to help us if things became desperate. Things have changed a little over the past year or two in that area, however, being in the unique position to see both sides of the fence, I know RAYNET really has a very steep hill to climb. We may be written into many emergency plans all over the country, we can help in annual exercises and be all friendly and cosy with LocGov/Fire/Police, but, when push comes to shove, how much trust have they in us (RAYNET)? We looked at what our local RAYNET really had to offer and how they may fit into our planning, and one of the stumbling blocks where the made up phonetics that seem to be used far to often, and the ability to communicate on the same level with Fire/Police/Ambo. There where lots of other concerns, but many in RAYNET have worked very hard to fix some things. I'm a proud member of RAYNET, under used, but happy to help and bring whatever helps to the table. As a group we have great skills to offer lots of Services, we just need to keep growing, become slicker and show our amateur professionalism (not often you get the chance to use those two words together )

Well, that ran away with itself.

                  Kind regards Terry

Posts to the appropriate Yahoo groups seem to have drawn the usual variance of opinion between those who don't see the need to isolate and do or would disconnect the remote heads with the main unit off but powered up and those who can see my point (and in one case one who has blown up a ft-8900) as to why there is a need to isolate the rig(s) (FT-857D and FT-8900R).

An e-mail to Yaesu UK brought forth the recommendation to isolate so I plan on fitting a relay along with my FT-8900 so I guess a 30amp automotive sourced relay that I've got should suffice.

Oh how I long for the old days when there was so much more space to fit rigs and I could just whip my old FT-290R out of its cradle and solve security problems with little effort.

Originally 6 digis also set up, but latterly 4 digis and 5 iGates on our own internal APRS-IS server.

One of the difficulties with timeslotting is that each tracker has a different implementation (or none in the case of the Kenwood & Yaesu radios), so is difficult to get a consistent setup if equipment is supplied by different people.
Great for lowland events with higher sited TT's and Controls, probably the worst possible antenna for a high-sited station! Radiation angle also helps explain the reduction in stray RF.

GPS technology has moved on and receivers like the SiRFstarIII are, as you suggest, very good inside vehicles / rucksacks etc. (not withstanding heat-reflecting windows!). The systems I use have Garmin GPS-12s which are not good anywhere else other than the roof of a car.

Panorama CDV - Excellent practical antenna (as are all the Panorama range), we also use the BSV for mast-mounting.
It can be carried in ground vehicles or, for example, in helicopters, and does not need a skilled operator.

Dr Mark Bentall, Chief Architect of Cassidian, said: "Existing communication technology used by military and emergency services consists of radios that operate over multiple wireless networks. During peak traffic times or in extreme weather conditions these networks can become congested, restricting flow and impeding operations.

"This system takes a holistic view of all routes from sender to destination, taking into account external conditions, message file size, priority, security level and physical location. It then decides on an optimum route for the information. Users can be confident that a message will reach its intended audience regardless of conditions."

Cyber security is now essential for modern military and emergency services, and the device incorporates Cassidian's latest encryption technology.

Dr Bentall added: "We have combined network mobility, security and quality of service delivery in a highly integrated, functional package. It is designed to remove complexity from the user and reduce the need for communication planning. A Mobile IP Node-based system can provide high levels of trusted communications without the need for skilled operators or users – they can simply send a message and know that the system will efficiently deliver it."

Article reference: http://www.contingencytoday.com/online_article/_Black-hole_-communications-problem-solved/3429

I am keen to try that side of radios and have been playing around with other power systems for a while.

I have a spare GPS that I could use right now plus all the cabling for in or out of a vehicle, and I could scrape together the money for the tracker just not a radio.

I have seen a portable operation in place that had a rucksack with a frame, batteries low down, an SLA/Gel-Cell and with a 10w Icom radio for HF use, the antenna was bolted onto the side of the rucksack and that was about a meter tall but started from lower than the base of the rucksack and could be extended.

I'm still a newbie with antennas also and these times of planning and doing things tend to be often seasonal due to work levels. But I'd like to get my mitts on a 4m mobile unit for use on that band as well as APRS at Raynet events such as you described.

I am not averse to loaning out my own gear at Raynet events but as other operators have put it, to take care and ensure that it is returned....

Then again, I've not really tried the 'sweep' or 'foot mobile' option as I am a tad unfit. Author: G1HUL
Subject: Bands & Power for APRS use
Posted: 05/March/2012 at 11:11

Obviously any band can be used for APRS, availability of equipment and event requirements shape what is actually used.

Our use of 4m stems from the Mull Car Rally, where 2m & 70cm were not usable due to the extensive voice network (16 interlinked talk-through units!). We had some low-band kit available for the initial experiments in 2001, then the huge number of Ascoms came available from RATS so we standardised on them.

We run 10w, never tried lower (problem with commercial sets is the missing signal meter, so you don't get a feel for signal levels). On Mull this was felt to be about right given experiences with voice comms, but in less mountainous terrain 5w may be enough.

Trackers run for 24+ hours on a 24Ah SLA using 10w, so no life-extension requirement to use lower power. Very occasionally we get breakthrough onto 2m when a mobile is right next to a talk-through or digi aerials are too close, but otherwise no problems have been experienced.

Our approach has always been to set up a separate closed system for a number of reasons.

High beacon rates from each station. We use a 1 minute cycle to ensure the location is as real-time as possible (with 12 mobiles this equates to a beacon from somewhere every 5 seconds). Put this on 144.800 and you will not be popular!

Pre-existing 144.800 digi's are rarely in the right place for good event coverage, so you end up adding your own anyway.

To guarantee we get the beacons, we don't want any non-event traffic on the frequency. We use tracker time-slotting to eliminate collisions, which ensures over 95% of beacons reach control. With other traffic on the frequency this can very quickly get below 50% and if 144.800 is busy in the area, can be low as 10%.

Very specific tracker and digi configuration to reduce digipeating repeats, which in turn helps digi battery life.

Digi's have telemetry enabled to monitor battery state so we can change them before the system fails.

Where possible we do gate the information to the Internet so those with iPads / smart phones etc. can monitor the system (this was been done over the weekend so the organiser could see where the buses were), but this is one-way.

Downside of using 4m portable is the lack of equipment (although Wouxun hand-helds are now available) and size of aerials when rucksack mounting.

For portable tracking 2m or 70cm is the logical choice, with all-in-one hand-helds and dedicated trackers being available, but be aware of the battery and external antenna requirements. GPS's are handheld battery killers (usually 80-100mA on top of the radio RX consumption) so spares need to be carried or available at checkpoints if out for more than a few hours. The handheld in a side rucksack pocket will be a lot less effective than a clip-on 1/4 wave, something to consider if you need wider-area coverage or a more reliable beacon.

We have tried portable tracking on 4m using a Yaesu FTH-1010 handheld, helical 4m antenna and 2.1Ah SLA (all in a little box). The overall weight and bulkiness made it impractical and the kit was rejected by the sweep team after covering the first couple of checkpoints. Also top-mounting the GPS on a rucksack is a challenge.

Our portable dilemma now is what to do, as we have significant investment in mobile 4m equipment, but the lightweight kit is available for 2m. One option being explored is to put 2m receivers on the digipeaters and cross-band the data onto 4m for onward transmission.
May depend on what kit you already have radiowise and also what your members have. Also whether you want your aprs traffic on its own freq away from the national and igates.

Power is a consideration but on a reasonable course the siting of suitably placed digipeaters is the key for good aprs coverage. 5w from a handheld works fine then. That's all you can have when sweep teams etc are on foot.

We use tinytraks but they all work and each group has their favourite.

Hopefully Jim will advise on what powers were used etc to cover the course. Hope you had a good time at he event.

Paul
M0LOM

However, those seem to be with mobile radios that would probably be putting out betwen 10w and 25w through a magmount antenna on the vehicle.

As I have no experience of this band or the setup, could those in RAYNET who use APRS on these bands and power tell me here how they fared using that power on 4m over 2m.

Also, how much difference would it make if the transmitter was only 5w. I have seen there are Wouxun hand-held radios out there that cover 4m and 2m but I don't know how well they would mate to the tracker/GPS.

The Opentracker seems to be about $40 right now and a mobile 4m transceiver can be picked up for under £100 whether 12v or handheld making things more possible. It would be helpful to retain other aspects such as if it is going to be hand-portable, using a GPS that would be on a cable that the operator could view it rather than just taking instructions from control to what they can see on the screen. If mounted in a vehicle then it is sometimes just easier to have it setup and secured away, but most plans have their postives and negatives.

No doubt this will make more sense after I've had more some sleep ;) but it was certainly a bit more of an eye-opener this weekend with the technology and paperwork :D :D
Also there are many other users on the frequencies using 'random' tones. So if the radios that you use have enough channels it is best to program in the same frequencies with different sets of tones so that at least you can shift away from problem, or be on the same set as the event organizer's sets.

73
